After a fantastic round 1 showing, Tobias Mead goes from strength to strength, with his first performance reaching over 2.3 million visits since it was made live.

Does this suggest that Tobias has a large following? His performance was something special, I hope this is only the beginning for the star.

A close friend of Tobias said “He is really proud of the video but he wants to be more than a background act.

“He’s aiming for the big time and thinks Britain’s Got Talent could make him a global sensation.”

Ashley Banjo tips Mead to Win

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Diversity star Ashley Banjo has revealed that he thinks Tobias Mead may be able to win Britain’s Got Talent 2010.

Ashley’s dance troupe won the ITV talent show last year but it has been Susan, who finished in second place, who turned out to be the real champion after she raked in £4 million in just one year, compared to Diversity’s £120,000.

Ashley told The Sun that the problem lies with Simon Cowell’s post show management team. He said: “At the end of the day, the whole team is slanted towards recording artists.

“It’s much harder for dancers because we can’t release downloadable material.

“We’re live, so obviously it’s really tough to get out there.”

“It’s a learning process. They’ve done things for us. They’ve done things for George [Sampson].

“There were things that were wrong, things that were good.

“They are a company who look after recording artists so the more they get to learn about non-recording artists the better.”

But Ashley revealed that he is a big fan of Tobias and was very impressed by his backwards dance routine showcased on Saturday night’s show.

Ashley said: “Tobias wasn’t just dancing, he came up with an interesting concept.

“As with all creative ideas, it would have been much harder than it looked.”

“I’m sure lots of girls will pick up the phone for him.”

He added:

“Dance is on the up this year so there’s every chance of another dance act winning.

“Dance acts really do capture the audience – especially in the UK because dance is fresh here and there are some really innovative and creative performers.”

“I would like to see the right act win though. If it’s a dancer, that’s brilliant.”

Mead Family Make Up

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Tobias Mead has finally stopped a long running feud with his brothers. His brothers got in touch with Tobias over the weekend after the show.

Speaking to The Sun, Mead explained: “My brothers got in contact with me over the last few days. They said they were sorry we hadn’t spoken for so long. They apologised for everything in the past and said they didn’t realise how much the teasing and mocking of my dancing had affected me.”

He added: “I apologised that they had to see the stories in the papers this weekend. But now the past is the past. We’re all willing to forgive and forget any issues that have gone on. I’m just grateful to have their full support.”

My Family Hate Me

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Tobias Mead has revealed a bitter feud tore his family apart – after he chose dancing over a football career.

Last night millions of viewers were wowed by Tobias Mead and his incredible back-to-front dance routine as the ITV series returned with a bang – and Tobias body-popped his way through to the next round.

Tobias, 22, reveals he was disowned by his own brothers after turning his back on football for showbiz – with one threatening “to smash his face in” if he ever saw him again.

And Tobias said even his dad used to taunt him at home, calling him “little gay boy” – even though he is straight and has a girlfriend.

The professional dancer from Warminster, Wilts, sailed through to the second round, with Simon Cowell telling him: “That’s the easiest ‘yes’ I’ve ever given.” And Amanda Holden gushed: “One of the best acts we’ve ever had on the show.”

But Tobias’s two older brothers Simon, 31, and Oliver, 25, haven’t spoken to him in five years. They also cut off all contact with their parents Susan and Doug, both 52, over Tobias’s career. Tobias told how the rift started when he told his family he wanted a career in dance.

“I told him I wanted to be a dancer and was applying for a performing arts course. He said dancing was gay and it was a phase I was going through.”

Tobias says it was then that his family began to pull apart – with mum Susan and sisters Cerrian, 29, and Georgia, 21, supporting his decision and his dad and brothers determined to stop him.

“My brothers hated me dancing – they thought it ruined their street cred. They had quite hard reputations in town and felt my dancing was embarrassing and rubbed off on them. Their mates would say, ‘What’s going on with your gay brother?’ – even though I wasn’t gay. At home they called me ‘Billy Elliot’ and ‘twinkle toes’ and said, ‘stop being gay’.It was horrible. Whatever I did they would call me ‘gay’ or ‘poof’.

“For a long time my dad wouldn’t talk to me at all. He was desperate for me to become a footballer because he had kids young and felt he’d missed opportunities he wanted me to fulfil.

“I was a good footballer because I was fast and was told I could make it in the Premiership. But my heart wasn’t in it.” So in 2005 Tobias left home to start his dance career with a performing arts diploma at City of Bath college – which led to him winning a scholarship to the prestigious Stella Mann dance school in Bedford.

And after graduating last summer Tobias was picked to support Take That on their UK Circus tour. He made close friendships with Mark Owen and Jason Orange.

“Jason loves dance – one evening we had a jam session in our hotel showing each other our moves.

“Mark became a good mate too. One night I got so drunk he carried me back to my room – I couldn’t walk. But they were very professional – if they had a show the next day they only had a few glasses of wine.”

It was only when he saw one of his shows two years ago that dad Doug healed the rift with his son.

But Tobias, who lives with his long-term girlfriend, still has no contact with his brothers and they have no idea that he auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent.

Oldest brother Simon has had a daughter and middle brother Oliver wed last month – without telling his family.

Last night Tobias said: “It is silly that their prejudices have torn our family apart. When my older brother’s daughter was born he sent a picture to my mum with a note saying, ‘This is the granddaughter you will never meet.’

“It was cruel and very upsetting. Who treats their mother like that? The last time I spoke to my older brother he said, ‘Tell mum to stop sending presents to my daughter. She’s not having anything to do with her.’ I refused to tell her that and then he said, ‘If I ever see you again I’m going to smash your face in.’ I haven’t spoken to either since.”

He says he first discovered his talent while dancing in his bedroom and taught himself his moves from a Michael Jackson video.

But he kept his skills a secret because he was already a target for bullies at Kingdown school in Warminster.

“I was 5ft 1in and wore glasses and got picked on for being short – I worried if they knew I danced it would draw more attention to me. And I knew my dad and brothers wouldn’t approve.

“At the end of term in my final year I agreed to dance in front of the school. People loved it and said it was cool. It gave me the drive I needed to go on.”

Now Tobias looks on course to follow urban dance act Diversity – the group which triumphed over Susan Boyle in the Britain’s Got Talent final last year.

Tobias credits his gran Marion Gibbs – who died of breast cancer aged 62 when he was 14 – as the inspiration behind his success.

“I was very close to my gran and I would talk to her about dancing – I hope she would be proud if she could see me now.

“When she died it hit my mum very hard. But seeing me on Britain’s Got Talent has made her proud and it feels like I’ve got my mum back.

“Even if nothing comes of this then it’s worth it to make my mum happy.”

Tobias’s dad Doug said: “I did disapprove of Tobias wanting to become a dancer. To say I was against it is putting it lightly. I’m a man’s man – a builder – and I wanted him to get a trade.

“I’m not homophobic – I just wanted him to choose a career that would make him financially secure.

“But my opinion has changed. He’s done really well, he’s very good at what he does and we will be watching him on the show.”
